In February 2025 I was playing in a pickup game at West Sunset. I took a mighty hack at a pitch and my damn bat flew out of my hands. It was at that moment I had to find a more effective bat grip product. I was using Pelican Bat Wax’s The Stick, it’s similar to Tiger Stick. Those 2 products in cold, damp weather don’t work very well. The cool winter temps cause the material to stiffen up and lose effectiveness. Enter Pelican Pine Pop. It’s pine tar in a convenient stick form. In cool, damp weather it’s way more sticky than the waxy Tiger Stick or Pelican’s The Stick. Another benefit is you don’t get a thick buildup like with Tiger Stick. With Tiger Stick or The Stick you put it on, rip a scorching triple down the left field line then they throw your bat back to the dugout. It doesn’t wear off much but it does get dirt all over it and it loses its effectiveness. So you add more Tiger Stick and over the course of a few games it gets kinda thick and you gotta scrape it off. Not so with Pelican Pine Pop. It goes on thin and it seems to not get thicker and thicker over the course of a few games. There are other Pelican pine tar products, and I have them, but Pine Pop works so well I haven’t bothered to use them. The added bonus, besides smelling great, is that their products are made right here in the Bay Area by a fellow baseball nut. What’s not to like?

About the Owner: Dave Phillips

Dave grew up in a big family of die-hard Giants fans, falling in love with baseball at an early age.

After building two successful companies in the print industry, Dave turned his entrepreneurial skills to the game he’s always loved. In 2013, he crafted the first batches of Pelican Bat Wax on the stovetop of his third-floor Mission District apartment—using a double boiler he found at The Salvation Army. He sent those early samples to players heading to Spring Training and used their feedback, year after year, to refine the formulas he still relies on today.

By 2015, demand had grown enough to justify doubling production and moving into a dedicated workspace. Today, Dave continues to build relationships with players at every level—from high school fields to Major League stadiums.

When he's not in the shop, Dave rides his bike across town to catch games at Oracle Park, plays ball in weekend leagues, explores the Bay Area, and is always on the hunt for the perfect beer and slice of pizza combo.
